What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

by Quan Thach on September 28, 2017
what is power over ethernet

Power over Ethernet, also known as POE, is a technology that allows Ethernet cables to carry electrical power.

An example would be a digital security camera which usually requires two connections when installed. The first connection would be the network connection, in order to communicate with video recording and display equipment. The second connection is the power connection, which delivers the electrical power needed to operate.

If a camera is POE enabled, only the network connection is needed since it will also receive electrical power from the cable as well.

Why use Power over Ethernet?

Power over Ethernet has many advantages to an installation.

Time and cost – network cables do not require a qualified electrician to fit them and can be installed anywhere. You will not require the extra expense of installing electrical power cabling. This will save you both time and money.

Flexibility – since an electrical outlet is not required, you can position the network cable anywhere you’d like and reposition anytime.

Scalability – having power over networking cables means that installation is simple and cost effective. POE can run up to 100 meters, which means you can install at further lengths with less hassle.

What cable should I use?

All of our Elite brand category cables 5e and up supports POE. You can shop for your next POE cable here.
